“To be happy and independent” SYC sailing theme summer camp is 11 years old this year. It has witnessed the progress that naive girls became Oxford students and innocent youths started their careers. This year, it has made a great step forward in creating a more professional and systematical sail training camp.

Stage 1 - Start Sailing  


Course purpose - The aim of this course is to provide a brief experience of dinghy sailing for someone who has never sailed before. By the end of the course, participants will have had a short introduction to the sport of dinghy sailing, including basic boat handling techniques and essential background knowledge. And successful sailor will be able to do certain sailing independently in light winds.

Course content: The course will include; Rigging, Wind Awareness, Sailing Techniques and Maneuvers, Rope work, Sailing Theory, Clothing and Equipment and Safety on the water.

Course acceptance requirements to register for stage 1 – Start Sailing: No sailing experience necessary, no swimming skill necessary, but the kid shall not be afraid of water

Certificate: Sailors with good performance can be given SYC Club certificate.

Price: 6200 RMB (for members: 5000)


Stage 2 – Basic Skills


Course purpose - By the end of the course the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing a dinghy freely in light winds.

Course content: The course will include, Rigging, Wind Awareness, Sailing Techniques and Maneuvers, Capsize Recovery, Meteorology, Launching and Recovery of your Boat, Using the 5 essentials, Rules of the Road, Ropework, Clothing and Equipment and safety on the water.

Course acceptance requirements to register for stage 2 – Basic Skills: Must have completed the SYC stage 2, or other equivalent recognized qualification from another training course / center.

Certificate: Sailors with good performance can be given IYT bronze level certificate and CYA Youth Training Certificate.

Price: 6800 RMB (for members: 5500)



Stage 3 – Better Sailing


Course purpose - By the end of the course, the successful sailor will have a competent, safe, practical approach to the sailing of small open boats and will be capable of sailing and making seamanlike decisions in moderate conditions.

Course content: The course will include, Advanced skills including better sailing Techniques and Maneuvers, Rules of the Road, Meteorology, Clothing and Equipment, Rigging, Launching and recovery and safety on the water.

Course acceptance requirements to register for stage 3 – Better Sailing: Must have completed the SYC stage 2 course at least one time or stage 1 course multiple times, or other equivalent recognized qualification from another training course / centre.

Certificate: Sailors with good performance can be given IYT silver level certificate and CYA Youth Training Certificate.

Price: 6800 RMB (for members: 5500)

For stage 2&3, we welcome young sailors with certain experience to join our camp. One the first morning we will run a sail check to match the kids with appropriate stage.


Race Training – Start Racing


Course purpose - To join regional, national and international sailing regattas.

Course content: The course will include, Professional-sailor-like Boat preparation, Boat handling, Boat speed, Teamwork, Racing Rules, Tactics, Psychological tactics and Starting techniques.

Course acceptance requirements to register for race training – Start Racing: Must have completed the SYC stage 2 or other equivalent recognized qualification from another training course / center.

Certificate: Sailors with good performance can be given CYA Youth Training Certificate.

Price: 7800 RMB (for members: 6300)

Instructors

Rob Allen - Training course director

Ten years working experience at Hebe Haven Yacht Club in Hong Kong. Trained thousands of youth sailors and dozens sailing instructors. He has built sailing teams to compete in international regattas for more than 10 schools in Hong Kong.

Julia Zhang – Former sailor of Shanghai Sailing Team; RYA dinghy instructor;  CYA (China Yachting Association) instructor

Retired from Shanghai Sailing Team in 2007. She was the champion of national youth sailing regattas for multiple times. After retirement, she learned to be a dinghy instructor and acquired RYA dinghy instructor qualification. She is devoted to pass her training and racing experience to young sailors.

H. Bordais – RYA senior instructor

French RYA senior instructor and powerboat instructor. Rich experience in international sailing regattas and sail training. Loved by local youths and parents. His personal sailing skills and quality of teaching are both excellent.

Nana Hu – Former sailor of Shanghai Sailing Team; IYT instructor; CYA instructor

Retired from Shanghai Sailing Team in 2015. She has done several water sports training including kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. Having participated in many sailing regattas, she is devoted to pass her training and racing experience to young sailors.

Eric Xu - IYT instructor; CYA instructor

Became powerboat expert in 2007. Obtained IYT instructor qualification in 2013.

Gary Hong – RYA instructor; CYA instructor

Became an SYC dinghy instructor in 2014. He has been a sailing instructor in summer camp for 3 years and his main job is OP, Topaz, Omega and Topper training.

Wenwen Zhang - Former sailor of Shanghai Sailing Team; CYA instructor

Has learned Laser Radial from 2014-2017 in Shanghai Sailing Team. She has participated in national sailing regattas and the best result was 2nd place in North Xiang River Invitational Regatta.

Scott Hansen – Sailor of Denmark National Sailing Team

Started learning to sail at Dianshan Lake since 12. Got selected into Denmark National Sailing Team at the age of 17. He has been an assistant coach during SYC summer camp for multiple times.

Boats

  • For smaller and younger students, Optimist(OP) will be used as training boat. For more than 80% of sailing fans around the world, OP is the first boat they use.

  • For stage 2/3 and bigger students, Topaz and Omega will be used as training boat. Topaz is sailed by 1-2 people, Omega is sailed by 4 people. Students can learn much about teamwork.

  • For race training, the students can use Topper boat. Students with good performance may have chance to experience the new Olympic fast sailboat Nacra 17.

    • lake-side villa and cabins offer close-to-nature also comfortable accommodations;

    • Heathy and delicious food cooked by high-level chefs.

    Arrangement of the camp

    Sunday, Registration:

         16:30 – Registration at SYC

         17:30 – Welcome ceremony and buffet

    Monday to Friday, the students have their training and live at the club

    Friday afternoon, end of the week

         13:00 – Parents arrive at SYC

         14:00 – End-of-week regatta

         15:30 – Prize Giving

         16:00 – Leave club

    Tips

    1. Sailing is a water sport, please prepare proper equipment such as quick-dry clothes, sunglasses, glasses rope, sailing shoes, etc. You can also buy the equipment at the club.

    2. Please bring change of clothes (at least 6 suit) and basic personal daily necessities (towel *2, bath towel*1, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, etc.)

    3. Please don’t bring valuables, electronic products (except mobile phone) and too much cash (we suggest at most 200 RMB)

    4. Please advise us in advance if your kids are allergic to certain medicine.

    5. If parents want to visit your kids, please give us a notice before you come.
